The American Legion: A Century of Service

The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization. Focusing on service to veterans, service members and communities, the Legion evolved from a group of war-weary veterans of World War I into one of the most influential nonprofit groups in the United States.

Membership swiftly grew to over 1 million, and the Legion became a powerful voice on Capitol Hill, advocating for veterans' benefits, national security, and Americanism. The organization helped write the first GI Bill, which provided education benefits to millions of veterans.

Founding of The American Legion

The American Legion was founded on March 15-17, 1919, in Paris, France, by members of the American Expeditionary Forces. A second organizational caucus was held in St. Louis, Missouri, on May 8-10, 1919. The Legion was chartered by Congress on September 16, 1919.

The founders chose the name "The American Legion" because they wanted an organization that reflected the diverse backgrounds of the American military. The term "Legion" was chosen to represent a large body of people united for a common cause.
